Barnsley Bereavement Support Service offers free confidential help
Barnsley Bereavement Support Service offers free confidential help from trained volunteers to those who cannot come to terms with their bereavement.
Coming to terms with the death of a loved one can be the most difficult emotional challenge we will ever have to face. No one has to face it alone. Not knowing what to expect or whether or not your feelings are normal can cause you added anxiety. It may be that those around you feel uncomfortable talking about your loss, perhaps they are in pain too. It might help to speak to someone who is not directly involved with your bereavement.
This service offer you a ‘safe space’ where you can cry without upsetting those close to you and where you can talk about the way you really feel in complete confidence.
Self referral is by telephone. It is available to all those who live in the Barnsley district and access to the service is by telephone. When the telephone is not manned messages can be left on our answer machine.
Our Referrals Officer will contact you by telephone and discuss your individual needs. We aim to return your call within 24 hours.
Your first appointment will last for approximately one hour. Confidentiality is an essential part of the relationship between the support worker and you. This will be discussed and any limits/boundaries at the first session.
The service is run by volunteers and managed by seven Trustees. It costs nothing to use this service but donations towards our work are always welcome.
We are here to help, if you think we can help, ring us.

Could you help someone cope with bereavement?
Barnsley Bereavement Support Service can train you as a volunteer support worker to provide confidential support to adults.
They provide this support in their local office or by telephone and home visit as requested by the client.
After successfully completing the training, they ask for a commitment of two hours a week to the service and attendance at monthly support workers’ meetings.
Contact them via email – bbereavement1956@gmail.com for further information and an application pack.
Welcome — I’m Julia Cawthorne, an experienced and friendly osteopath based in Barnsley.
For over 38 years, I’ve been helping people of all ages — from tiny babies to great-grandparents — overcome pain, recover from injury, and feel more comfortable in their own bodies. Whether you’ve woken up with a stiff neck, are struggling with long-standing back pain, or simply want to keep moving well as you get older, I’m here to help.
Osteopathy is all about understanding how the body works as a whole. I use gentle, hands-on techniques to ease muscle tension, improve joint movement, and support your body’s natural ability to heal. My aim is always to treat the person, not just the problem, so you can get back to doing the things you love.
I work with people of all ages and stages of life, with a wide variety of issues, including:
After nearly four decades in practice, I know that no two patients are the same. I take the time to listen carefully to your story, assess how your body is moving, and explain clearly what I’ve found. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that suits you — whether that’s a few targeted sessions or longer-term support.
I also like to give practical advice you can use at home, from stretches to posture tips, so you feel more in control of your recovery.
Your first appointment will last around 45–60 minutes and will include:
Osteopathy is a recognised, hands-on healthcare approach that focuses on the whole body, not just the area that hurts. It’s suitable for people of all ages and can often help when other treatments haven’t made a difference.
With 38 years of experience, I’ve seen the difference that personalised, skilled care can make — whether that’s easing long-term discomfort, speeding up recovery after injury, or simply helping you move with more.
If you’d like to book an appointment or have any questions, I’d be happy to hear from you.
