As many of you may be aware, a recent incident on the squash courts at Shaw Lane Sports
Club required the use of our defibrillator. Thankfully, due to the prompt actions of club staff
and members, the person suffering a cardiac arrest was successfully resuscitated, transferred
to hospital, and is now recovering well. Without this specialist equipment, the outcome
could have been very different.
Whilst we are incredibly relieved and grateful for this positive outcome, the incident has
highlighted the importance of ensuring we are fully prepared should such a situation arise
again.
 
Following a review of our facilities, visitor numbers, and the size of our site, we have
concluded that an additional defibrillator is essential. We propose installing a new unit on
the outside of the Griffin Suite, allowing quick access from the rugby pitch, Astroturf, Men’s
Shed, bowling green, and function spaces. The unit will be protected by an emergency
access code provided by the Emergency Services when required.
 
The cost of purchasing and installing the defibrillator, protective casing, replacement pads,
and providing staff and volunteer training is significant:
– Defibrillator, casing and replacement pads – £1,500
– Staff and volunteer training – £500
 
As a community club, we are appealing to our sports sections, tenants, on-site organisations,
staff, members, and the wider local community to come together and support this important
initiative. Every donation, large or small, will help us continue to keep people safe and
ensure we can respond quickly and effectively in an emergency.
 
We would also like to thank those individuals who have already pledged donations towards
this appeal.
 
The charitable arm of the club, the Shaw Lane Foundation, will manage all donations and
any funds raised above the target amount, will be ring-fenced for future lifesaving
equipment and first aid training.
